Among the many problems the Brazilian national team has been having lately, the lack of a convincing centre-forward is a particularly big one.

Wolverhampton Wanderers striker Matheus Cunha is one of those who’ve been called up for the position, but he hasn’t been given a chance to start under Fernando Diniz so far, and is waiting for the opportunity to try to impress the new boss.

The player was now interviewed by Globo Esporte about that situation, and talked about the big competition there is to win such a wanted place in the national team.

“There’s a lot of competition in the national team. There are a lot of quality players fighting for space, and I realise that I have to be at my best to get a place in the squad,” Matheus Cunha told Globo Esporte.

Despite that, Cunha claimed to be confident about his potential to earn the national team’s number nine in the near future.

“I know the qualities I have, what I can bring to the team and to the proposal that Professor Fernando Diniz has for the team.”

The player also claimed that he’ll always play for Wolves thinking of drawing the national team’s attention.

“I’m going to keep working day in, day out and doing my best here with Wolves, because I know I’ll be watched.”

Since Diniz’s arrival, the striker made three appearances, but was only brought in at the end of the games, and didn’t contribute to any goals.

Featuring for Wolves this season, Cunha has two goals and one assist in 11 games, having scored against Crystal Palace and Bournemouth.

Wolverhampton Wanderers may be given an opportunity to resurrect their interest in forward Boulaye Dia in January as Salernitana are willing to listen to offers for him.

That’s according to Il Mattino, relayed by Calciomercato, who say a move in the winter window ‘cannot be ruled out’ at this moment in time.

Wolves were keen on Dia at the end of the summer transfer window, making a bid for him in the final few days and on deadline day in a late effort to bolster Gary O’Neill’s squad.

Their proposal was rejected by Salernitana, who were not interested in what was offered and even later publicly derided the offer that had been made by Wolves.

The player eventually went on something of a strike, falling out with the Italian club over what had happened and his failed move to the Premier League.

He’s since returned as is establishing himself as a key player once again but Il Mattino say a farewell in the January transfer window cannot be ruled out.

According to them if the club were to receive a ‘convincing offer’ they would be more than happy to sell, although what figure they would consider as convincing isn’t mentioned.

In the meantime, Torino’s president is in talks with the player and his agent to discuss potential changes to his contract and perhaps the re-inclusion of a €25m release clause that expired in the summer.

That would then, presumably, be the figure everyone is looking at and it’s debatable whether Wolves would be able to afford such a figure given their difficult financial situation at present.

Nonetheless it seems the opportunity may be there if they want to explore it, although O’Neill’s ability to get his forwards firing may mean a striker is no longer considered a priority target for the club.

Standard Liège sporting director Fergal Harkin has expressed his delight over his decision to sign Hayao Kawabe from Wolverhampton Wanderers in the last window. He made this claim during an interview with Het Belang van Limburg, relayed by Walfoot.

The Japan international arrived in Europe for the first time when Swiss side Grasshoppers took him from Sanfrecce Hiroshima in 2021.

Kawabe’s displays for Grasshoppers caught Wolves’ attention and they secured his services in January 2022. However, the Premier League side allowed him to return to the Swiss club on loan until the end of last season.

The 28-year-old has left Wolves permanently without making an appearance for them. Harkin has now revealed that he was advised to sign the player and explains why he’s pleased to have gone ahead with this operation.

“Even when he was playing in Japan, our scouts already had an eye on him. His two good seasons in Switzerland confirmed their suspicions that he had the physical qualities to be a valuable player in the Belgian league. He was recommended to me, I looked at his images and I was quickly convinced,” he said.

Walfoot claim Harkin ‘congratulates himself’ for having signed the midfielder from Wolves for €1.5m. The cheap deal has worked out well so far for the Jupiler Pro League side as Kawabe has managed three goals and two assists from 12 games this season.

“Hayao was exactly the profile we needed. A player who could help us with more goals with his acumen, passing and scoring ability. It’s amazing how many key passes he’s made already this season. The timing and speed of his balls are usually perfect,” Harkin explained.

Wolverhampton Wanderers winger Goncalo Guedes has indicated he would like to remain at loan club Benfica, but they won’t explore the idea until the end of the season.

That’s according to Jornal de Noticias, who say the Portuguese forward would be more than happy to remain with his former club on a permanent basis.

Guedes spent the second half of last season on loan at Benfica and renewed that deal in the summer, with neither he nor Wolves keen on a reunion after his disappointing year at Molineux following a €32.6m move from Valencia in August 2022.

Guedes is seemingly happy with how things are going and would like to stay where he is long-term, with the newspaper saying he ‘expresses his desire’ to remain.

Benfica are aware of this desire, and it has been noted by those in charge at the Portuguese club, but they will only consider evaluating a deal at the end of the season.

In other words, they see no reason to rock the boat at this moment in time given they have a loan deal secured until the end of the season.

Perhaps they want to wait and see how Guedes performs before potentially committing to a permanent deal with Wolves, who would presumably be looking to recoup as much of their initial outlay as possible.

Borussia Mönchengladbach defender Nico Elvedi has insisted he’s not upset he didn’t get to leave the club in the summer transfer window, despite Wolverhampton Wanderers’ efforts to get him.

The centre-back has been speaking to Rheinische Post, relayed by Gladbach Live, following a summer full of speculation about his future that ultimately ended up with him signing a new deal at the German club.

Elvedi had been linked with a move away from Gladbach throughout the summer as his contract was due to expire in 2024, meaning a sale was seen as a necessity if they weren’t to lose him on a free next year.

Wolves were linked with a move for him throughout the summer as they looked to bolster their squad, with a report in July stating that negotiations were ongoing.

That was followed by a report detailing how Elvedi had been convinced on the move to Molineux and then numerous claims from Gladbach making it clear they’d be happy to sell.

A deal never happened, though, as Wolves’ financial situation meant they never met Gladbach’s demands and Elvedi stayed where he was, eventually signing a new deal.

That’s something he seems to be happy about, though, insisting he’s not upset that a transfer never happened.

“Of course, I thought about taking the next step, but I also still had a contract with Borussia,” he said.

“That’s why I didn’t let myself down in training. In the end it didn’t work out with a change, but I don’t think that’s a shame because I really enjoy playing here. I am happy that I have extended the contract and I really appreciate that I am still part of the club.”

On Saturday, DAZN Portugal will show an interview with Wolverhampton Wanderers goalkeeper José Sá.

Some bits of that conversation are already doing the rounds in the local media, and Record now quote the player speaking about Wolves’ match against Manchester City.

Sá was asked about Matheus Nunes, who left Molineux to join Pep Guardiola’s side in the summer. He claimed their friendship continues, with Wolverhampton players cheering for him.

“After the City game, we all had a chat – he even brought us our shirts – and of course he’s happy… And we just have to support him and be happy for him,” José Sá told DAZN.

The goalkeeper also spoke a little more about that important win in late September.

“Very happy too, because we were coming off a draw with Luton, which we also needed to win, because we knew we were going to play City next and, theoretically, we know that the normal thing is to lose – right? It’s not that we were going to lose, but that’s what people expect.

“So we knew we had to win against Luton, but we drew, and then obviously that win against City was incredible, it was really good and I think the guys deserved it too because they worked really well, they’ve been working really well. For me, it was the first time I’d beaten City. Of course I’m happy, right? But all in all, it was a win.”

Wolves beat Man City 2-1 at Molineux on the 30th of September, with Ruben Dias scoring an own goal and Hwang Hee-chan getting the winner.

In nine games for the club this season, José Sá conceded 15 goals, and only kept one clean sheet – in the win against Everton at Goodison Park back in August.

Following last weekend’s win over Bournemouth, Wolves now prepare for the clash against Newcastle United at Molnineux on Saturday. Gary O’Neil’s side currently stand 12th in the Premier League, with 11 points after nine matches.

Reports from the Portuguese media today reveal an attempt that Sporting made to sign a Wolverhampton Wanderers player in the summer window.

Leonino write that in the final days of August, the Lions made contact for the transfer of Pablo Sarabia to the Lisbon side.

Sporting wanted to know the conditions demanded by Wolves for a potential deal. However, with the Premier League club not interested in a negotiation, their ‘unwillingness’ to negotiate stopped the move from happening.

The Spaniard had already played for the Lions back in the 2021/22 season, when on loan from Paris Saint Germain, and left a good impression at the club, with 21 goals and ten assists in 45 appearances.

It was in January 2023 that he was signed by Wolves following a €5m deal with the French club.

Now it seems Molineux side stood firm to keep him this summer, but he’s not really their first option on the wings so far. Sarabia has seven appearances this season, and stayed on the bench without being brought on for four consecutive matches.

It does make sense that Wolves want to have depth in their squad, though, and that’s probably why they didn’t accept letting him go. The winger is tied to a contract until 2025.

Salernitana striker Boulaye Dia has admitted it’s been a complicated few months for him following his failed move to Wolverhampton Wanderers at the end of the summer transfer window.

The striker has been speaking to DAZN, relayed by Calciomercato.it, about his situation at the Italian club after a difficult summer for them both.

Dia was heavily linked with a move to Wolves right at the end of the summer window, with Gary O’Neil’s side sending a proposal to take him to Molineux.

Their offer was nowhere near what Salernitana had been looking for though, with the club and director of football Morgan de Sanctis publically laughing it off after the window had closed.

They rejected the various proposals that Wolves sent but this did not go down well with Dia, who wanted the move and appeared to go on strike after it collapsed.

He was missing from Salernitana’s squad for several weeks after the debacle, with reports in Italy making it clear that his relationship with the club had seemingly been fractured, perhaps beyond repair.

He’s since returned to the side and this weekend saw him bag a double against Cagliari, helping his side to avoid a costly defeat with 85th and 95th minute strikes.

It was a big moment for him on his developing redemption arc and he admits life has been tough following that failed move to Wolves.

“They have been complicated months”, he is quoted as saying before adding that he is “at the disposal of the coach and his teammates” and has “talked a lot with the coach” about his situation and the fall-out following the summer.

Whether that means he is now completely happy and uninterested in a move remains to be seen, of course, but it seems the troubles caused by Wolves late bid are now firmly in the rearview.

Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Theo Corbeanu has been out on loan since the summer of 2021.

The 21-year-old left Toronto FC for the Premier League side in 2018 and after spending three years with their academy, he made his first team debut in May 2021, and that’s his only appearance for Wolves.

In the last window, Gary O’Neil’s side allowed the winger to join Grasshopper Club Zürich on a loan deal.

Nau.ch state the Wolves owned player had a ‘perfect start’ with the Swiss club, registering three assists in his first three games. Since then, he’s scored once and failed to assist in his last nine matches.

Speaking to 86TV, relayed by Nau.ch, the attacker has expressed his unhappiness over his dip in form. The Canada international is clear that he wants to use his strengths to help Grasshopper and also leave a mark while on the pitch.

“I’m not satisfied with my performance so far. It’s important to stay consistent. I also want to refine the elements in my game,” he said.

“I like playing 1-on-1, being a tricky player. I want to be a threat and cause chaos for the opponent. I want to make a difference.”

Grasshopper are currently in the bottom half of the table after only two wins from 10 league games. Despite the poor start, the Wolves man remains confident that things can improve going forward this season.

“It was a bit of a bumpy start. But these results were often unfortunate. We had some good performances where we didn’t get what we deserved. I see no reason why we shouldn’t set ourselves the European places as a goal,” Corbeanu explained.

Wolverhampton Wanderers loanee Gonçalo Guedes would love to stay at Benfica for longer.

That was said by the player himself, as he had a chat with multiple Portuguese journalists on Tuesday.

In a video published by Mais Futebol, the Wolves player talked a little about the talks which took him to Benfica, and commented on how happy he is to be at the Lisbon side.

“I had this idea. I had spoken to those responsible that it was possible. We had negotiations and it went very well, in the best way, and I was very happy because playing for Benfica is always like being at home. I’ve spent my whole life here, and I hope, if I can, to stay here longer.”

Guedes had already been loaned to Benfica back in January, but his injuries stopped him from showing his best at the club. Since he went through a knee injury, a return to the Eagles was the best solution Wolves found for him in the summer window.

The winger is now recovered and even played for a few minutes in the match against Estoril before the international break. Now he’s set to get into the Lisbon side’s starting team, and that’s when he’ll start trying to prove himself at his favourite club again.

His potential good performances for Benfica can only be good for Wolves, who’ll have better arguments to negotiate his sale next summer.
